In the time of frost, bare trees, and long dark nights, oftentimes, I find myself working away sloppy sketches in the comfort of the bedroom instead of the office, where it is warmest in this old home. Here, I don't need to be dressed up. I don't need to organize my workspace to accommodate what task I'm doing that day. I don't need to be reminded of the 50+ other things from my open planner to stress about. I don't get to be reminded of all the games I have collecting dust on the wayside. I can just be me, comfortable and unconcerned with the outside world. Art has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. As a 28 year old, it might not be impressive to the older generations, but it's the thing I cling on to. There's no "natural talent," no artistic "gift," just a pencil, some quiet time with my thoughts, and years and years of practice. I never wanted to be anything in particular when I grew up. Instead, I just knew I wanted to make art and share it with people because it was the thing I knew how to do. I should have invested time into a career, but I was a dreamer. I've let go of job advancement opportunities, I dropped out of college, said no to tattooing, and to videogame design, and where has that gotten me? I have an officially licensed business making art I want to make when I want to make it, making connections with amazing people and small businesses each year. The growth is slow because I have a day job to pay my bills, a weekend job to go towards debt, and a homesteading dream that occasionally eats up time and energy, but it's worth doing it. This business doesn't make me rich, but it has positively impacted my ability to afford things when shit got tight. I have challenges I look forward to facing, rather than grueling over what someone else wants from me. Growth is always on the horizon, and the vision is ever changing. I have a slice of life I carved out for myself, rather than one others paved for me. Also, fuck AI. And fuck it for also being the initials of my business. New Year calls for new projects, and I'm about to tackle a big one! Tarot has been part of my life as long as I can remember. Most of my time with it had been secretive, but in the last couple of years, I've allowed myself to be more open about it, drawing cards with and around friends and some family. Even more recently have I been open to doing readings for others who are close to me. I'm self-taught, guided by my own studies and practices, and given occasional advice from who gifted me my first deck all those years ago, my mother. I will likely never stop learning all there is to know. Symbolism is infinite! This year, my goal is to take a deeper dive into tarot, not just as a practitioner but also as an artist. I have many decks, all of which I love for their various purposes, but I've always struggled with feeling like there is something missing from them. So, why not make one with that missing piece? And why not share it with the world? Cheers to the new year ✨️ 2024 has been a year of learning and growth, both on a personal and professional level. Some of it has been hard, but there are many amazing and wonderful memories made as well! This year was my first venture into vendoring, and I absolutely loved it and can't wait to do more! This year, my wholesale has expanded as well and has allowed me to pay my bills without worry when I got in a tight spot. I've learned what I like and what I don't like about my business, and I plan to make some changes in what I provide in the future.
